The Red Devils trailed the Blues by 19 points in the title race this season and must close the gap next year
Gary Neville believes Jose Mourinho could prove to have done a superior job at Manchester United than Pep Guardiola at Manchester City by next season.
While Guardiola’s Blues raced away with the title this season, reaching 100 points in the process, Mourinho is aiming to secure silverware for the second consecutive season in the FA Cup final vs Chelsea.
But Neville believes next season is crucial for Mourinho’s legacy at Old Trafford and providing context to his rivalry with Guardiola.
“These two managers have been at Real Madrid and Barcelona and both won leagues there,” Neville told the Mail.
“Ultimately at the end of next season if Pep wins another league that will be a big problem over a three year period.
“But if Jose was to win the league next year you could actually argue Jose has done the better job. Next season will be critical.”
United face the Blues at Wembley this weekend, aiming to salvage the season after trailing city by 19 points in the Premier League.
